The Lady Penguins defeated the Tacoma Titans on Feb. 6 at the O'Connell Sports Center by a final score of 80-71. This victory is the 14th consecutive win for Clark. The Penguins remained undefeated in conference play.
The game got off to a slow start with Tacoma in the lead, but the Penguins tough defense and solid offense kept the lead changing hands most of the first half.
Sophomore guard Deborah Simmers hit a big 3-pointer in the 12th minute launching them to a 22-19 lead. This helped the Penguins gain enough momentum to take a 10-point lead with 2:45 on the clock and a 43-34 lead going into halftime.
Dominating in the second half, Clark kept the Titans at bay maintaining the lead and never allowing their advantage to fall below eight points. The Penguins endured four ties and five lead changes during the game.
Simmers supplied 17 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. Sophomore guard Chelsea Dyson added 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. Contributing 14 points, Sophomore forward Macy Mukensnabl added five rebounds and one steal. Sophomore guard Clara Russell joined the action adding 12 points, two rebounds, five assists and two steals.
"We are taking it one game at a time and I always tell the players to never underestimate your opponent," said Nancy Boone, head coach of the Penguins.
The Penguins defeated Highline Community College on Feb. 4 by a final score of 74-63.
Simmers earned her third double-double of the season and added 28 points and 13 rebounds. Dyson added 14 points and seven rebounds.
Clark walked out of Auburn with a win on Feb. 11, beating Green River 64-60. The win was the 15th straight for the Penguins and their 11th in conference. Chelsea Dyson led the scoring with 18 and Deborah Simmers scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
The Penguin's momentum continued to build after a 73-52 dismantling of Lower Columbia on Feb. 13. Clark earned a berth in the 2012 NWAACC playoffs with a perfect 12-0 conference record. Simmers dropped in 23 points to lead the Penguins. Dyson contributed to Clark's 16th consecutive win with 19 points, nine rebounds and nine steals.
"Well, we have beaten every team so far, so I think the season's going well," said Freshman Chelsea Karvia.
Simmers was honored as player of the week for the week of Jan. 29. She totaled 64 points, hustled 19 rebounds, supplied nine assists, six steals and two blocks during that time span.
Clark plays Pierce at the O'Connell Center on Feb. 15 before hitting the road for two straight games. They take on Tacoma on Feb. 18 and Centralia Feb. 22. The Penguins return home for the season finale against Grays Harbour on Feb. 25. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
