The Clark College women's basketball team defeated visiting Grays Harbor College 84-40 Wednesday night. Point guard Deborah Simmers led the Penguins with 29 points and seven rebounds.
Almost every possession ended with the game announcer, Lee Brand, commenting and adding Simmers' name to it.
"We always say, ‘Help someone get theirs and you will get yours,'" head coach Nancy Boone said, "and Deborah has done that and it paid off tonight."
With 6 ½ minutes left in the first half, Simmers hit back-to-back threes, bringing the score to 36-8 and making her four of four from beyond the arc.
"We were really moving the ball well tonight as a team," Simmers said. "I got the opportunities because my team was able to efficiently move the ball around."
By the end of the first half, the Penguins were choking the Chokers 48-12. By the end of the game, Clark added another 36 points to its score, bringing them up 84-40.
"We could have done better on defense," Boone said with a smile. "A coach is never satisfied."
Also contributing for Clark was guard Clara Russell, adding 14 points and eight rebounds to the Lady Penguin's second league win.
"We have been taking one game at a time this season," Boone said. "It was first beating Centralia, which hasn't happened in a long time, and then it was tonight beating Grays Harbor. Now we have to go out and beat Highline."
The Penguins overall are 7-4 and are looking to improve after they play Highline Community College this Saturday at the O'Connell Sports Complex with a 3 p.m. tipoff.
"Hopefully we can keep it up and beat Highline on Saturday," Simmers said.
