The red-hot Vancouver Volcanoes extend their winning streak to five in a row. The Volcanoes were down to their opponent, the Waves, for the first five minutes of the game but came back and steadily increased their lead, winning 130-112.
The visiting Oregon Waves showed up to the O’Connell Sports Complex nearly empty handed with only nine players able to make the road trip.
“We did a good job of moving the ball, playing full court defense, and did a great job of using our depth,” Brad Lechtenberg said.
The Volcanoes had 23 assists, forced 18 turnovers, and had 14 players play compared to the Waves nine.
“The Oregon Waves are a lot better than the score that they have, and they were missing a lot of players in the game,” head coach Bryan Hunter said.
Vancouver’s bench scored 75 points compared to Oregon's 37 points off their bench. Lechtenberg came off the bench for 20 minutes, scoring 21 points while hitting six of the Volcanoes’ nine three-pointers.
“It was my job to get open, and the guys did a great job of finding me at these times,” Lechtenberg said. “Those points are really accredited to them.”
Going into the end of the first half, Vancouver was up 68-55 and shot 50 percent from the field.
Porter Troupe lead the team in the first half with 14 points in his first game back for the team this season.
“I just wanted to come out aggressive and put my imprint on this game,” Troupe said.
“Having Porter return really adds more depth to our team,” Kevin “Pip” Bloodsaw said. “If we have depth out there (on the court) then on the bench we can have a lot of guys that can also be quality players.”
Bloodsaw another key contributor from the bench, with 12 points, 5 steals, and 7 rebounds.
“I just tried to come out from the bench and give a boost to the guys out there on the floor.” Bloodsaw said. “I play at a high intensity and try and get some steals, rebounds, and just push the ball as much as I can.”
In end the Vancouver Volcanoes bench was just too overwhelming for the visiting Oregon Waves, with the end score showing it all, 130-112.
The Volcanoes waved goodbye to the Waves, but not for the final time. These teams will be meeting 3 more times this season. The next home game for the Volcanoes verses the Wave will be on June 26 at 7 p.m.
“Its always good to get the first win against a team that you will be meeting three more times,” Hunter said. “Now we have the confidence going into the next one.”
